Union County's established estate-acreage feeder
How does Weddington High School compare to Marvin Ridge?
Weddington is the older of Union County's two top public feeders — established in the 1980s versus Marvin Ridge in 2006. Its assignment area covers larger, older estate acreage (2–10+ acre lots north of Highway 84), a distinctly different price tape, and one of the strongest athletic programs in North Carolina. Academics are excellent but with a slightly less STEM-forward posture than Marvin Ridge.

Weddington High School is the original destination cluster of Union County. Before Marvin Ridge opened in 2006, virtually every south-Charlotte executive relocating to Union County was targeting the Weddington feeder, and much of that inventory — Providence Downs, The Preserve at Weddington, Weddington Chase — still defines the boundary today.
Where Marvin Ridge is compact and newer-construction, Weddington is spread across larger, older parcels. Two-to-ten-acre lots are common. Trees are mature, driveways are long, and horse fencing is not unusual.
Academic Profile
Weddington High earns an 'A' school-performance grade and is a fixture in the top-25 NC public high-school rankings. AP course catalog is extensive and dual-enrollment with SPCC and UNC-Charlotte is well established.
Athletics are a defining piece of the Weddington identity — the football, lacrosse, and swimming programs are consistently among the strongest 3A/4A programs in the state, and college-recruit visibility is a real factor for athletically-serious families choosing between Weddington and other feeders.
Real Estate Inside the Boundary
Housing stock skews older and larger than Marvin Ridge — 1990s and early-2000s custom estates on 2–5 acres in Providence Downs, The Preserve at Weddington, and Bristol Cove; a growing cluster of new custom builds on remaining acreage; and a handful of gated micro-enclaves along Providence Road.
Price band roughly $1.1M–$3M for most of the boundary, $3M–$5M+ for the estate-acreage tier. Waterfront is limited to a small number of private ponds; the amenity is land and canopy, not lake.
Lifestyle & Commute
The Weddington community centers on the Waverly / Providence Road node — Publix, Whole Foods, Piedmont Medical, and a growing restaurant scene at Waverly Place. Weddington itself remains largely residential and low-density by design.
Commute to Uptown Charlotte runs 30–40 minutes via Providence Road; Charlotte-Douglas Airport is 35–45 minutes.
Advisory Notes
Weddington buyers are typically choosing land and setting over new-construction finish level. Buyers arriving from denser markets (New York, Chicago, Bay Area) sometimes underestimate how much acreage changes maintenance — lawn, tree, and pond upkeep is a real annual line item.
Assignment boundaries at the northern edge of Weddington shift with capacity — several streets flip between Weddington and Marvin Ridge middle schools. Verify current-year assignment before offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better: Weddington or Marvin Ridge?
Neither is objectively 'better.' Weddington offers larger lots, older estate character, and stronger athletic tradition; Marvin Ridge offers newer construction, tighter proximity to shopping, and a slightly stronger STEM pipeline. Choose based on the lot type and lifestyle you want.
What is the average lot size in the Weddington boundary?
Between 1 and 5 acres for most subdivisions, with meaningful inventory at 5–10+ acres in The Preserve and along adjacent estate corridors.
Is Weddington a good market for horse property?
Yes — better than any other top-tier Union County feeder. Multiple neighborhoods allow fencing and small barns as of right, and the surrounding rural land offers meaningful hacking and boarding options.
Are Weddington schools open-enrollment for out-of-boundary students?
No. Union County Public Schools assigns based on residence. Out-of-boundary attendance is not permitted at Weddington.
