The New Luxury Suburbs: Why Buyers Are Choosing Weddington, Waxhaw and Mint Hill

Twin Lakes, Cheval and Woodhall are not household names. In the MLS record, they sit near the top of the Charlotte region's luxury market.

Ask most people to name Charlotte's luxury neighborhoods and few will mention Twin Lakes in Weddington or Cheval in Mint Hill. In our review of MLS records, both recorded median sale prices around $1.9 to $2 million over the last two years.

What Buyers Are Paying For

The appeal is simple. These communities offer new or nearly new homes, larger lots and modern floor plans that are hard to find closer in. Twin Lakes showed 14 active listings and Cheval 10 on October 18, 2026, so buyers can still choose. Most in-town neighborhoods rarely offer that.

What to Check

New construction carries its own questions. Buyers should confirm school assignments with the district, because assignments change as these areas grow. They should read the HOA documents closely and ask what remains to be built nearby. They should also compare the builder's base price with what similar finished homes have actually sold for.

The Trade-Off

Distance is the price of space. Commutes to uptown and SouthPark are longer, and the established tree canopy of older neighborhoods takes decades to grow. For many families, the trade is worth it. For others, a smaller home closer in is the better fit.
